Satoshi Suzuki Talks “What TSURIAMIKI Are” Episode 5

Episode 5 of How LOOPWHEELER Is Made shares a simple explanation of what TSURIAMIKI are. My explanation in the video is not perfect, but I tried to make it as easy to understand as possible. Even if everything is not explained in full detail, I believe the good qualities of TSURIAMI textiles still come through.

The term LOOP WHEEL MACHINE is often used, but the correct name is TSURIAMIKI. The reason a TSURIAMIKI can knit only about one meter per hour comes from its structure. The number of yarn feeders is limited to one for TSURIAMI jersey, two for TSURIAMI inlay, and three for TSURIAMI loopback. With each rotation of the TSURIAMIKI, only one course is knitted. If the machine rotates twenty four times per minute, that produces twenty four courses. Multiply that by sixty minutes and you get one thousand four hundred forty courses in an hour. If we assume, for easy calculation, a thread diameter of one millimeter, one thousand four hundred forty millimeters becomes one hundred forty four centimeters. This is why we say the machine can knit roughly one meter per hour. The structure of the TSURIAMIKI is the reason for this slow and gentle production.

There are many other structural characteristics, and I would like to have a proper conversation one day with CEO Minakata-san of Kanekichi Industries, who can explain it far better than I can. I should ask Yoshimoto to help plan that project. For now, I would be happy if you could enjoy the YouTube video. Thank you very much. @Satoshi Suzuki
